About The Eaten Path

Can I follow The Eaten Path on Twitter?
Um, that’s a strange question for you to be asking right off the bat, but the answer is yes.
While you’re at it, check us out on Facebook!
What is this blog about?
The Eaten Path delivers the story of a meal.
Sometimes it is about the meal. Sometimes it is about the journey to get to the meal.
What foods does this blog cover?
Sometimes we cover sit-down restaurants and fine dining establishments, but we’re
typically drawn to the meal that is more an object of precondition than of presentation.
Soft spots for holes in the wall, regulars, meals from wheels and unholy creations of
the flavor-stoned. Tastes of another walk of life.
That said, we don’t read the Zagat Survey and don’t try to break the news.
With so many qualified eaters already writing about food on the internet, we prefer
to take a step back and write through the lens of narrative rather than review.
While we do not write about free meals and avoid one-off reviews as much as possible,
we are undeniably food bloggers, not professional food critics. We observe this distinction,
and encourage a healthy dose of context and skepticism when reading any food blog.
The authors of this blog share a love for writing and living as great as our love for food,
and we work to create stories that are meant to be savored. We hope you enjoy them.
Do you mind if I use your photographs in my article?
Whenever any of our writers includes a photo that he or she didn’t take in a post, that photo is
attributed and linked to the image’s original page. We’d appreciate the same courtesy from you.

be it for a food review, travel guide, iphone app or anything else, please e-mail James about it.

James Boo – New York City – Tuesday Weekly
James is the founder, editor and head writer of The Eaten Path. When not eating his way around the boroughs, James teaches GMAT prep for Knewton, writes guitar pop and helps make things happen at Ice Cream Man. He also writes a regular column on barbecue, “When Pigs Fly” at Serious Eats. James’ best memories involve pork, the Bay Area and Ben Sisko. |

Zach Mann – San Diego – Friday Biweekly
Zach believes that the elusiveness of the term “Americana” is poetry, and the fastest way to capture its definition is through honest, regular meals of varying ordinariness. Born in Venice, Zach traverses the streets of San Diego and Los Angeles, jonesing for counters, booths and soups of the day, chasing cultural and regional understanding between Early Bird Specials and Late Night Happy Hours. On his days off, he writes about movies at It’s Okay With Me; on his best days, he does both. |

Emeritus – Stephen Shull – Palma, Spain
Stephen was born in Los Angeles, California. In 2008 he moved to Palma, Spain, on the island of Majorca, where he worked as an assistant teacher at a secondary school and as a private English tutor. During this time he also contributed a series of columns to The Eaten Path on the food and drink of his new home. He has since relocated to New York to work full time as a Latin teacher. While not obsessing over obtuse issues of language, Stephen drowns his sorrows in Minorcan gin and low-quality beer, and finds the occasional respite in the abundant and inexpensive fresh fruits, vegetables and pork products that the island of Majorca bestows upon those blessed to call her home. |
| Emeritus – Chi Tung – Shanghai
Chi hails from sunny Santa Barbara and wrote for The Eaten Path during his time in Shanghai, where he hosted a science and tech show without a hint of technical knowledge or irony. In his ample free time, he moonlights as a writer, foodie, and amateur karaokephile. Though his Northern Chinese roots reveal a soft spot for noodles and savory pancakes, Chi isn’t above the occasional all-you-can-handle Japanese buffet. He also delights in crackpot metaphors and references to Ping Pong Playa, which he maintains is Chinese America’s answer to Anchorman. |

Emerita – Vicky Lai – Travels to Japan and Taiwan
A fan of farmer’s markets and foam art on her coffee, Vicky feels like a clichéd foodie. She loves to pass the time looking at photos of pastries, as any proper food porn addict should. After growing up in Fremont, California, Vicky spent her formative food years in Los Angeles, exploring a lot of random Latin food. She then spent one great year in the United Kingdom, where her fondness for mushy peas, cider and Pimm’s (both summer and winter varieties) was developed. Vicky now works in Beijing, editing and doing economic research and travelling through Asia in her free time in the eternal hunt for the yummy. |

Emeritus – Tyler Luiten – Bonn, Germany
Many dream of vast riches, fancy cars, or living a rock-star life. Tyler dreams of babaganoush, burritos, outdoor food markets, and how many different things one can cook in a tagine. He can often be found in bookstores, hunting new cuisines, and he will forever be fighting off his insatiable sweet tooth. A native of the beautiful Pacific Northwest, Tyler moved to the San Francisco bay area for college, where his passion for food blossomed. He eventually decided to earn his PhD in Madison, WI, and as a part of that process is now situated in Bonn, Germany, where he is investigating the tantalizing nuances of dead Germanic languages. Tyler enjoys comparing European food culture to that of America, and is overjoyed when he is introduced to new foods not commonly found back home. |

Amit Kumar – Web Developer
Like most of the Eaten Path crew, Amit grew up in Southern California. He was nudged into the world of flavor by a healthy regimen of home cooked Indian food and introduced to the world of joy by many a meal at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. After graduating from UCLA, he moved to New York City, where he now works as part of the development team at Barnesandnoble.com. Amit built the customized navigation tools and image based gallery on The Eaten Path – you can read his development blog at amitkumar.com and challenge him to a hot sauce eating contest at amit@theeatenpath.com. |
We’re currently looking for columnists to write about food and life from all over the world on a weekly or
biweekly basis. If you’d like to become a correspondent for The Eaten Path, please e-mail James
to inquire about open positions. Priority will be given to qualified writers who are living abroad.
