All of you have misinformation..George Todoroff in Jackson Michigan invented the coney dog at Todoroff's restaurant in 1914...so that whole war is for nothing. Please get the facts right Mathew Wolfe. Jackson is the birth place of the republican party and the coney dog. George was making coneys 3 years before the doors even opened at lafayette or american. If you don't beleive it ....google ...where was the coney dog invented and read the 1st installment where it says Wikipedia encyclopedia

"Ignorant or an idiot" "chauvinistic dope" - Wow - someone forgot to take her Midol! Such vehement repartee is what REALLY shows true Ignorance from a card-carrying Dope :-)

One thing he/she DID get right though - there IS no comparison between a Nathan's famous and any other dig - Nathan's wins hands-down no contest. Heck, that's one of the reasons that the most famous dog-eating contest is held there every year!

As for "Coney Island of the Mind" - yes, you can have Coney Island in your MIND anywhere anytime - but come up with your own name for something that is existing in the Real World.

A thorough and almost scholarly disquisition on the coney dog, sufficient for newbies yet meaty enough for locals. Excellent job.

And BTW, anyone who thinks a Nathan's hot dog somehow compares to a Lafayette Coney is ignorant or an idiot. I suppose this chauvinistic dope will also be bitching to Lawrence Ferlinghetti about "A Coney Island of the Mind" not being appropriate for a San Francisco beat poet.

Nothing look like a good ole hot dog joint.
I don't know about them inventing the Coney Dog but I can't disprove either.
Looks good, probably 2,000 calories or more but hey sometimes you gotta live on the edge.

The hot dog was invented in Coney Island, Brooklyn, but the Coney dog -- a hot dog slathered in beanless chili and onions -- was invented in Detroit. I believe Mr. Keros chose the name with the intent of paying homage to his forebearers, not perpetrating any sort of fraud.

Musically, a better analogy would be if the inventors of a musical genre were to name their creation after a place from which they drew inspiration, but did not actually derive. Which is exactly what happened with "Detroit techno". Its inventors -- Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, and Derrick May -- were not from Detroit: they were from Belleville.

How can any hot dog joint in MICHIGAN claim to have "invented" the Coney Dog, which, as the name defines, is NOT from Detroit, but from Brooklyn?? If American, or Lafayette, or any other Detroit eatery, wants to claim invention of a "DETROIT DOG" then they are free to do so.

Nathan's Famous pre-dates either of those spots by at least a year, and for any place NOT from Coney to purloin the name of something that already existed elsewhere borders on fraud.

Wonder how Detroiters would feel if Harlem, for example, claimed to have "invented" The Motown Sound?

Sheesh, get your own name.......

Well, the fellow did say, "I'm worried I'm getting fucked". I suppose I could have deployed a euphemism, but none seemed to do justice to his black mood.

Just saw these two on Food Wars and came across your posting. Great article with good info, but why the f-bomb just randomly thrown in there. Not offended, just wondering why you felt it necessary because it seems like a completely forced way to use it.

Fantastic post -- an excellent example of how the experience around food is just as important as the food itself. And food doesn't have to be fussy or fancy to have a sense of history that people have a strong connection to.
