The Eaten Path Is “One Lovely Blog”
21 October 2009 - James BooComrades,
I wasn’t able to write a column this week due to personal medical issues and preparations for my upcoming trip to North Carolina. I would like to take a moment, however, to thank fellow food blogger Wasabi Prime for presenting The Eaten Path with a One Lovely Blog Award!
I don’t typically spring for this type of thing, but being singled out by Prime, who couldn’t possibly be a more loving reader (and a passionate blogger and hilarious caption writer, to boot), has reminded me that the best part of running this web site is being able to meet – online and in person – others who are inspired by food, especially those who enjoy creating and sharing just as much as consuming.
So: During this off week, I’d like to extend the blogging camaraderie. The “Food and Friends” menu from our navbar above, of course, acts as a more complete directory of the sites we know and love, but here are some highlights from our own personal blogrolls.
Hungry in Taipei, Traveler’s Lunchbox
“Usually these two are my favorites, but i haven’t been able to read them lately. I like the the first one for its recommendations: I have tried a few, and they were very, very good. Good descriptions on why things are worth the visit and good advice indeed on where to eat in Taipei. I like the second one for its beautiful photos and for its recipes (but mostly for the beautiful photos).” -Vicky
mmm-yoso!!!
“When a food blog so thoroughly explores a city as mmm-yoso!!! does with San Diego, it becomes more valuable than Yelp! for locals. Because Kirk has great taste in food and because he never crosses the line from food admirer to food snob, mmm-yoso!!! is my first stop for answering the question “Where should I eat today?” in San Diego.” -Zach
Monster Munching
Elmo was the first food blogger I really latched onto and followed religiously; to an Orange County Chowhound his punchy, informative reviews are an invaluable resource. Having shared a meal with the man himself, I can attest from experience to his eye for straight-up serious eating and his nose for the best meals in OC.
Vinicultured
Regular readers of this blog are no stranger to my good friend Joon, who has been featured in more than one post in the past. His wine blog isn’t as frequent as it could be, but is as full of life and personality as any good blog should be. The only thing missing is Joon’s penchant for outlandish fraternal homo-eroticism, and the tannins in that are too strong for public consumption anyhow.
Serious Eats
Hailing from New York, Serious Eats doesn’t fit the bill for this particular theme, but it’s the one food site I check every single day. I’ve met a few SE editors, all of whom are full of win – for food news, expertise, reviews and random food-related tidbits, there’s no better team to have on your side!

Hey James,
Thanks for the shout-out! I have to repay the compliment: yours is one of the few blogs I follow with any amount of regularity. I agree with Wasabi Prime’s sentiment that I can’t read your blog when I’m hungry because, well, I’m not a masochist (unless the price is right). The topics are novel, the photos well-composed, and the articles themselves pieces that are equal parts literary and culinary, with dashes of philosophy and social commentary for added flavor.
I also agree with your observation that I don’t post nearly enough. Unfortunately, there are two very precise mathematical relations that govern my blogging behavior:
Wine + law school = disaster
Law school loans – wine = no money for basic expenses
(Perhaps you might have seen that this equals “law school loans – no money for basic expenses + law school = disaster” which… makes sense…? But mathematical rigor has never been my forte.)
I’m looking forward to the BBQ festival this weekend!

Great blog reccomedations!
I, too, am in New York now, but recently lived in both San Francisco (5 years) and London (1 year). My blog covers some of those territories, but also has what I call personal essays about food, which seems to fit similarly with what The Eaten Path covers.
See in particular a recent series I did called “The Year of the Cucumber” (http://jilleduffy.blogspot.com/2009/09/year-of-cucumber-part-i.html).
Two others that I love:
Lemonpi – an inventive baker from Australia with gorgeous photos: http://blog.lemonpi.net
Madrid Lab – Adam Melonas’ blog for his experiments and exploration of food: http://www.madridlab.net/melonas

Thanks so much for the shoutout and the awesome comments — I hope all is well with you. I see you are in deep, meditative preparation for your BBQ trip that will I’m sure rival the journey of Frodo and Sam on their quest through the lands of Mordor. I think if they were instead on an epic task to cook pork products in the fires of Mount Doom, it would have been way more rad than throwing a ring in there.

Thanks for the recs, Jill! I wasn’t even aware you were a fan of the blog :]
Joon and Prime – no problem! Let’s keep a good thing going. I am now on a quest to find the one pork shoulder to rule them all.

Thanks so much for the mention! I love the diversity of cuisines and locales you all cover.
