Good looking out, fanatic- I wonder how much their staff has changed over the past few years (I haven't eaten regularly there since 2005), as I remember them always being laid back and friendly. Another gloomy sign that one of my favorite places really is going downhill :(

I used to love going to Lucky House Thai for take-out, and I never thought the food was fantastic, but it was satisfactory when I didn't feel like cooking. But recently, they gave me the wrong order and then insisted I was lying when I called and tried to see if they would let me come by and switch it. I was pretty stunned by this, and when I called a day or two later to speak with the owner, he started swearing at me (using the 'f' word) and hung up on me when I was trying to request that they refund my money... and this is from someone who used to go there at least once every week! I prefer restaurants where everyone is a little more mellow and treat their customers better... plus the food really isn't so great.

(By the way, for dinner I went to a small local greasy spoon and ordered one of their specials: two slider-sized hamburger patties--one each on their respective half of a split French roll--underneath a quartered all-beef hot dog. I customized mine by requesting it with chili con carne, shredded cheddar, and onions. I finished it off with a small order of fries--no salt, thanks. I ate it at home, then promptly fell asleep for an hour and a half.)

This sounds like one of those places I like to dub "everyday restaurants"--restaurants that are unassuming, not spectacular, but good, cheap, convenient, and consistent. It definitely does not sound like one of those places I would call a "first date restaurant," though it IS the type of place one could visit with a long-term, steady partner--one of those people with whom you are done impressing with superficialities and instead are willing to share the meaty substance of life.

Great post! Makes me simultaneously miss Berkeley AND Thai food. =( But Ben's Chili Bowl--and other places--await.
