You should really pick up The Tummy Trilogy by Calvin Trillin, which in many instances goes in depth into the wonders of Kansas City food. I'm not sure exactly how much or how gracefully those legends have aged, but I have a lot of faith in Trillin's words.

When you ask about Oakland, are you inquiring out of curiosity or disbelief? My favorite ribs in the East Bay, despite harsh words from BBQ purists, are at Everett and Jones. Go to the Jack London Square location with the whole family and order them extra spicy! I've heard that the quality has declined, but as E&J has never been entirely consistent, I'm hoping that's just a result of their boom-and-bust nature.

Flint's BBQ in South Berkeley is also a good option. Much rougher around the edges and not nearly as spicy as E&J's ribs, but a lot cheaper, so it balances out. Take out only, so it's a great option for takeaway ribs.

Chef Edward's BBQ in Oakland does a fine rib and/or rib tip dinner, but the real prize there is the Piggly Wiggly special (sliced BBQ pork sandwich with neon yellow pepper and vinegar slaw). I'll be writing that up later this month.

I'd have to say the best overall BBQ in the immediate Bay Area is still Memphis Minnie's in the Haight. Classic Memphis style texture, served dry with a killer spicy sauce should you choose to apply it. Great brisket, great fries, very decent everything else.

Any BBQ tips for CA?

I believe this is the first review I've read of a restaurant in Kansas City. Where's the Oakland place to get ribs?

Wow, that's an idea, monopoly barbeque. I think you should make it. You could have all your favorites that you could visit, or purchase. I just saw a bottle of the sauce, and that is about as close as I have gotten. But it is on my to do list. I can't wait to go..
